In Tune With The Infinite

Ralph Waldo Trine

Today's modern world can be overwhelming. From the sheer volume of information that we are expected to process to the finesse of interpersonal relationships, the world is moving faster, and it can be difficult to keep pace. People are constantly running, trying to cram as much into a day as possible. For many, the concepts of spirituality and quality time have gone the way of the dodo. In an effort just to keep pace, many folks have lost touch with what it means to truly feel joy, to be at peace, and to feel connected. People get lost in the static, the minutiae, and lose sight of what truly matters. One of the interesting aspects of In Tune With The Infinite is the fact that even though it was written over 100 years ago, when the world was so very different, the message still holds true today.

The basic concept is that there are universal laws, constant and omnipresent. All of Nature is in tune with these laws as part of the Infinite Spirit that flows throughout the cosmos. When we live in harmony with this flow, we can create the world of our dreams. When we struggle against them is when life becomes a nightmare.

To begin, Trine presents the idea that 'We build from within and attract from without'. This is to say that who we are internally dictates the result we see in the world. When we fully develop our own internal awareness, focus, and direction, we can then attract the same in the world. The thought and belief must come first, because what we truly hold as such will subsequently manifest in our lives. To this end, we must be clear in our thoughts and desires, and true to our convictions. "He alone fails who gives up and lies down". Trine speaks of fear and worry as the ‘two black twins’ that carry the germs of despair and defeat. When reason fails, we rely on faith. It is this faith and focus that keeps us on our path. Without this, we are subject to doubts and negativity, which then become increasingly more prevalent in our lives. If what we desire is good and right for us to have, and we attune ourselves to the Infinite, then what we desire will come to us. With this basic precept, Trine goes on to explain why the phenomenon exists, and how it is applicable to so many aspects of our lives.

At the heart of the cyclone tearing the sky,

And flinging the clouds and the towers by,

Is a place of central calm.

So, here in the roar of mortal things

I have a place where my spirit sings,

In the hollow of God's palm. - Edwin Markham

As with any good philosophical discussion, we begin with definitions to make sure that we are all starting with the same principles and understanding. Trine states that the definition of  Heaven is  harmony. Harmony with God and the forces of Nature. Whereas Hell comes from the Old English meaning to be walled off from, separated from. In this sense the separation is from God and the power and wisdom that is represented therein. God, he defines as the creator of Universal Laws. If God created these Universal Laws, then de facto, God is therefore a greater force than the Laws themselves. Only something greater can create a thing as the act of creation requires a power that is above and beyond that which is intrinsic to the creation itself. This then becomes the basis from which Trine presents his thesis.

The Supreme Fact of the Universe, he says, is this. Since God is Universal and omnipotent, this must be inclusive of all things including man. Man is therefore God, and yet God is man and more. All is of the same essence and quality, only different in degree. This is basic philosophical logic. It's like oranges and fruit. All oranges are fruit, but not all fruit are oranges. While oranges have all the qualities that make up fruit, they are but a small part in the greater understanding of fruit in general. To this end, humanity has all the qualities of God, just to a much smaller degree. From this we move on to The Supreme Fact of Human Life. In the degree that we come into a conscious realization of our oneness with the Infinite Life, and open ourselves to this divine inflow, do we actualize in ourselves the qualities and powers of the Infinite Life. This is huge because it acknowledges that in order to benefit from our birthright, we must be aware of it. Ignorance limits most of mankind as they are unaware of their true power and potential.  It's like anyone who is brilliant at a thing. Had they never tried that thing, they would never have realized their brilliance. Whether it is a sport, or a musical ability, or public speaking, if we never did the thing, how would we know if we were good at it. Most people go about as if in a dream, never realizing their true nature and the power they have .

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. - Marianne Williamson

The next step, then is how to manifest this brilliance. Trine states that thought is the link between the Infinite and the material. It begins with an attitude of mind. By closing oneself to all things below, we can then be open and receptive to higher influences, to all things above. It is a focus on the ideal rather that the details, the music rather than the individual notes. When we open ourselves in this way we realize the time is not simply linear, and that Life is omnipresent. As such, by opening to this power, we can have an effect on multiple levels. "Life is the one eternal principle of the universe and so always continues, even though the form of the agency through with it manifests be changed." As such, we attract on every plane of existence - not only the material, but also the spiritual. Support, power, and guidance may then be provided by those who have come before, and even who are yet to manifest.

Focus is the key, however. "We attract whatever we desire or expect. If we desire one thing and expect another, we become like houses divided against themselves, which are quickly brought to desolation. Determine resolutely to expect only what you desire, then you will attract only what you wish for." This  can be easier said than done, though. For this reason, faith is required to keep us on track when the static and distractions threaten our commitment. Faith is the operation of the thought forces in the form of an earnest desire, coupled with the expectation as to its fulfillment. The degree of faith determines the degree of manifestation.

We must remember that the human will is positive but limited. Divine will knows no limit. "The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty." God is immanent as well as transcendent, and may speak to us in a quiet voice. Intuition is the presentation of the Divine will. Inspiration is to the spiritual what perception is to the physical.

In terms of our focus, part of this faith is based in emotion. If we focus on success, but worry that it will never happen, we are not pure in our intent. We send a mixed signal to the Universe, and often end up with results that are contrary to the desired. Emotions themselves are powerful enough to manifest their own results. "Various mental states, emotions, and passions have their various peculiar effects upon the body, and each induces in turn, if indulged in to any great extent, its own peculiar forms of disease and these in time become chronic". Proof of this can be seen in the fact that there are chemical differences in the sweat and saliva of different people based on their individual mindsets and emotions. It has been found that specific ailments are directly related to specific acute and/or chronic emotional states ie. fits of rage or chronic worry.

The energy flow of the Infinite is of health and joy. The more we open ourselves to this flow of energy, the more pure and energized we become. It’s like running clear water through a muddy hose. If we continue to let the pure water flow through, it will eventually clean out all the mud, and the water will be as clear and pure when it comes out as when it went in. This is the difference between cause and condition. Sitting in a draft may make one person sick while another feels only a cool refreshing breeze. It is not the circumstance but our reaction to it, our beliefs and attitudes. Are we masters of our circumstance, or victims of it - utilizing scapegoats and making excuses?

To this end, Trine states that ultimately in an enlightened world, “the true physician will be a teacher, his work will be to keep people well, instead of attempting to make them well after sickness and disease comes, or and still beyond this there will come a time when each will be their own physician.” We are just now awakening to this understanding as we realize some of these concepts. By giving care to the body, but attention and focus to the mind and spirit, we allow the greatest Power for healing and wellness to work as our ally. Rather than relying on our finite knowledge and limited perspective, we can benefit from the wisdom of the Infinite.  "The true physician and parent of the future will not mediate the body with drugs so much as the mind with principles. And the health of your body, like the health and strength of our mind, depends upon what you relate yourself with." The more we are open to the Infinite, the more abundant health and strength can flow in.

Because we are all part of the Infinite, we must realize that we are also totally connected to everything else. If everything is simply a part of the larger whole, then it makes no sense to discuss individuals. It would be like considering a hand or foot independent of the body to which it is attached. What benefits the part, benefits the whole. What harms the part, harms the whole. This is the Spirit of Infinite Love. We are all members of the one great body, and no portion of the body can be harmed without all the other portions suffering thereby. There is a oneness of all life. We are partakers from this one Infinite Source. Another benefit is that when we realize that the same life is the life in each individual, then prejudices go and hatreds cease. How can I love my finger, but hate my thumb?

Selfishness is ignorance. Wisdom makes each of us a single member of the one Great Body. We are therefore benefited in just the degree that the entire body is benefited. We then seek nothing for ourselves that we would not equally seek for all mankind. We should do as we would be done by. If you would have all the world love you, you must first love all the world. In the degree that we love will we be loved. Thoughts are forces. Each creates of its kind. Each comes back laden with the effect that corresponds to itself and of which it is the cause.

There are loyal hearts, there are spirits brave,

There are souls that are pure and true,

Then give to the world the best you have,

And the best will come back to you.

Give love, and love to your heart will flow,

A strength in your utmost need,

Have faith, and a score of hearts will show,

Their faith in your word and deed. – Ralph Waldo Trine

Trine then speaks of The Spirit of Infinite Wisdom which is available to all of us by letting the Divine guide us. Not through other people, institutions, or books, but by going directly to the Source. These agencies may be teachers, but should not be recognized as masters. Intuition and conscience are the voice of the Higher Self and the way that God speaks to us. They are the inner guide of the soul. True education is an evolving from within utilizing intuition to guide intellect and reason involving Infinite Power. Wisdom transcends knowledge because it involves intuition. While knowledge can be of many facts, wisdom is the universal laws that govern them. It is the difference between spending a lifetime cataloguing trees as opposed to taking the higher perspective of realizing that we are standing in a forest. Intellectual pride can get in the way of true wisdom. Wisdom may come from unconventional means, but it is the light of truth rather than the mire of minutiae. By opening ourselves to true wisdom and eschewing intellectual pride, we can become aware of all possibilities.

This inner wisdom can also be set to task. Although the body requires sleep, the mind can continue along a particular path (since there will be no distractions from the outside world), and provide and answer upon waking. Upon waking we have the opportunity to start anew. "All yesterdays should be yesterdays, with which we have nothing to do. Sufficient is it to know that the way we lived our yesterday has determined for us our today. And...All tomorrows should be tomorrows. Sufficient to know that the way we live our today determines our tomorrow." Live in the moment. Live each "hour as it comes, but not before it comes." By living this moment to its fullest, then doing the same with the next, and so on, this becomes a habit, and can lead to the most exemplary life.

Peace is to be found within by being spiritually minded (being at one with God). Therefore, less peace and harmony opens the way for dis-ease, discontent, and suffering. This peace also allows the objectivity to see situations and people clearly for what they are. We can look past the obfuscation and ruse. We are not flustered, and can keep our bearing regardless of the outside situation. It is the one who has come into the realization of their own true self who carries this power with them and who radiates it wherever they go. They radiate, attract, and embody peace. This is achieved by aligning oneself with the Infinite, by becoming one with God. This is true Power and will make manifest whatever is held in the ideal. “Strength and success are attracted to them as like attracts like. Strength builds from within and attracts from without.” Faith begets courage begets strength begets success. It is up to us to know ourselves and decide how we will be. It serves nobody to say, “I’m just this way, I can’t help it”. Nonsense! Make a decision, and stick to it.

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right - Henry Ford

In order to tap into this Infinite Power, we must be clear in our vision, and true to our path. The degree in which we open ourselves to the Spirit of Infinite Power does power then manifest in us. With God all things are possible if we work in conjunction with God. Man has dominion not only over the physical, but over the spiritual world as well. If miracles are supernatural it is only because they are above what we consider to be basic nature. By elevating our spiritual nature we become in tune with these higher laws and power. It is only through the perception of more limited minds that the workings of these Universal Laws seem like miracles.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. -Arthur C. Clarke

The same is true with circumstance. Power is in individuality. Lead the way, and others will follow. It is better to be bold and forge the way for the betterment of all than to be stuck in the morass of mediocrity and rhetoric of arbitrary rules that serve nobody. This is the beginning of The Law of Prosperity aka. The Law of Attraction. Like attracts like. To the extent that we open ourselves to the Infinite Source can we actualize all the things that it is desirable for us to have.

One of the most difficult aspect of this kind of faith, however, is remaining detached from the outcome. When we attempt to limit the Infinite, we only serve to bottleneck the flow. It can be difficult sometimes to see the greater plan at work. What we desire might not present itself outright (it rarely does). More than likely there are intermediary steps that must be achieved first.

The reason a lot of people do not recognize opportunity is because it usually goes around wearing overalls looking like hard work. – Thomas Edison

When we loose something, it may be because something better is coming. Rather that lingering on the loss, focus on what you are looking for and pay attention so that you will be aware of it when it presents itself. Rather than complaining, look forward and focus on actualizing what you desire. See yourself as having already achieved your goal. There is a story about a Native American who went to the top of a mountain during a time of great drought to pray for rain. He gathered his power and spirits around him, and then went silent. When asked whether he had prayed for rain during the silence, he said that he had not. He explained that had he done this, he would simply have been focusing on the current lack of it. Instead, with his eyes closed, he created in his mind all the images, sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of rain. In his mind, it was raining right then and there. He could feel it on his face, he could smell the damp earth, he could hear it splashing in puddles. He created the reality in thought, imbued it with emotion, gave thanks, and left it to the Universe to do the rest.

Remember, action is required. Focus on the goal, and do not judge what is presented. Seize upon opportunities. If they are not quite right, then adjust your focus accordingly. Each opportunity, however, is a step towards refining and attaining the goal.

Once we begin to tap into this Infinite Power, we must keep in mind that it is a flow. What we have should not be hoarded, but rather used wisely. We are the stewards of whatever is entrusted to us, and must act appropriately to affect the highest good. Money is like energy, that's why it is called currency. It needs to flow to be effective. When we hoard, we create a bottleneck that prevents the flow of energy. In order to grow, we must keep this energy, this abundance flowing. Trine likens it to a tree which must lose its leaves in the fall in order to grow and gain new ones in the spring.

Again, it is a matter of benefiting the whole. By serving others, we serve ourselves. By helping others, we help ourselves. The closer we come to God, the more we can aid in lifting others to this realization. In doing this we enable them to be more closely aligned with Spirit as well. Buddha said, "people are in bondage because they have not yet removed the idea of I". True wisdom and power, and hence true peace and joy means living in harmony with the Higher Power. We are wise in the degree that we live according to the higher light.

One of the aspects that has kept people separated through history ironically is religion. Each religion purports to being the “true faith”. Anyone who believes otherwise is shunned as a heretic or worse. This is the quintessential limitation of the narrow-minded. The Universal religion is that there is an Infinite Spirit of Life and Power that is behind everything, working through and in everything. Beyond that the details don't matter. Of course there are myriad religions. Each developed given the specific details and environments that existed at that time and in that place. From a larger perspective, however, we can realize that they are all just different paths up the mountain.

For true worship, only God and the human soul are necessary. Everything else is irrelevant details. Times, seasons, and occasions don't matter. Communion with the Almighty can occur any time in any place that one attunes the soul with the Infinite. When we love self less and love truth more, we realize that people may be ministered best in the ways that makes most sense to them. It matters not the specifics of what we believe for as long as each person finds a way to the Infinite, all are better for it.

The best way to be in tune with the Infinite and to receive the benefits discussed is by simply being open to it. With an open mind and an open heart, Spirit will rush in. Present a receptive attitude and an earnest, sincere desire.

Are you in earnest? Seize this very minute:

What you can do, or dream you can, begin it.

Boldness has genious, power, and majic in it.

Only engage, and then the mind grows heated.

Begin, and then the work will be completed. - Goethe

Coming into this alignment with the Infinite allows us to move as with other natural systems. The cycle of the seasons, the ebb and flow of the tides, the planets moving in their courses don't fret or bother or struggle. "All the frictions, all the uncertainties, all the ills, the sufferings, the fears, the forebodings, the perplexities of life come to us because we are out of harmony with the divine order of things...(When) body, soul, and mind become perfectly harmonized, life becomes full and complete."

Life is only complex in that we make it so. We concern ourselves with the results or effects, without considering the cause. It is what is inside us that manifests on the outside. Spirit transcends intellect and body. Intuitions and impulses are the Divine leading us.
